How to (Politely) Shut Down a Food Pusher

The holidays are here. This year, while you’re decking your halls, if you’re not careful you might not only be packing up gifts but packing on pounds. 

We all have that one friend or family member. Sometimes this person can eat just about anything and not gain an ounce. Or, maybe it’s your aunt you see at all of your family gatherings, constantly pushing seconds, mashed potatoes and dessert. Whoever the food pusher is in your life, you can say no, without hurting any feelings, with these tips.

“You don’t need to diet…”

Thanks, aunt Sally, but really, I do. If the food pusher in your life doesn’t think you need to diet or if they are concerned about your diet, use this as an opportunity to thank them for noticing your healthy new lifestyle. While the diet comment was probably made as a jab, turn it around and put a positive spin on it.

“Here, I made this for you!”

Sure, you loved your cheesy potatoes, but your dairy free diet restricts you from indulging. Politely thank the food pusher and explain to them why you’re unable to imbibe. Whether you’re gluten free, dairy free or vegan, they will understand. Once you say that you have a diet restriction they should back off.

“Taste this desert, you’ll love it!”

They’re probably right. If you’re like me, desert is your weakness. But, if you’re saying no to sweets, simply use the excuse that you’re too full to have another bite. Nobody can counter this comeback.

“Hand me your plate.”

Uh oh. You don’t really know what’s coming here. If the food pusher in your life insists on dishing up your plate or serving you at the table, politely say that you can’t wait to try it in a little bit. Simply put, stall. Stalling works because it gives you time to decide if you do want to try the food and it gives you the change to serve your own portion.

There are a lot of scenarios where you might encounter food pushers. At work, at home with your spouse or partner, on the job with your coworkers or boss, at the dinner table for the holidays or even with your friends for a night out. If you’re not eating certain foods or drinking alcohol, stand your ground and be firm when you shut down the food pushers in your life.
